Strathcona

Strathcona is Vancouver's oldest residential neighbourhood, known to the Coast Salish as Kumkumalay long before it took Lord Strathcona's name. Bordering Chinatown, it is an eclectic mix of colourful heritage houses, apartments and one-of-a-kind shops and restaurants. Community gardens and a deep sense of history give it a character found nowhere else in the city.

Getting around

The neighbourhood sits just east of downtown, an easy walk or bike ride from the core, with the Union Street bike route running right through it. Frequent buses and nearby SkyTrain stations connect it to the rest of the region.

Schools & family

Strathcona is home to two of Vancouver's oldest schools, including Lord Strathcona Elementary, which opened its doors in 1891. Community gardens and neighbourhood parks add to its family-friendly, grassroots feel.

Unique local shops, cafes and restaurants line the streets, with the markets, bakeries and dining of adjacent Chinatown just steps away. The area rewards those who like to explore on foot.
