Vancouver Island
The Salmon Capital of the World, gateway to Discovery Passage.
The Area
Campbell River has long billed itself the Salmon Capital of the World, a fishing and forestry city on Discovery Passage that also serves as the main gateway to Strathcona Provincial Park, BC's oldest.
Discovery Pier lets anglers fish for salmon right from downtown, and the Museum at Campbell River and the Maritime Heritage Centre trace the city's fishing, logging and coastal First Nations history along the waterfront.
BC Ferries connect Campbell River to Quadra and Cortes Islands just offshore, both popular for their slower pace and artist communities, and Elk Falls Provincial Park's waterfalls and old growth forest sit minutes from the city centre.
As the largest city on Vancouver Island's central east coast, Campbell River offers fuller services and shopping than its northern neighbours, and its position as gateway to Strathcona Provincial Park's mountains and lakes gives it an outdoor recreation base few BC cities can match.
