BC North
A misty container port city at the end of the rail line.
The Area
Prince Rupert occupies a rainforest covered island on BC's north coast, home to one of North America's fastest growing container ports and the ferry gateway to Haida Gwaii and Alaska.
The Port of Prince Rupert's Fairview Terminal offers some of the shortest sailing times between Asia and North America of any major West Coast port, and the container, grain and coal terminals that surround it anchor a working waterfront economy that has drawn steady investment.
Cow Bay's brightly painted heritage buildings and boardwalk keep the fishing and cannery era alive downtown, and BC Ferries and the Alaska Marine Highway both sail from the same terminal, linking Prince Rupert to Haida Gwaii, the Inside Passage and southeast Alaska.
The climate is famously wet and mild, and the surrounding rainforest, salmon runs and marine life give the city an outdoor character all its own. Housing stays affordable, and the working port keeps the local economy busier than its remote location might suggest.
