Kootenays
A heritage lake city known for its arts scene and mountain access.
The Area
Nelson wraps around a hillside above Kootenay Lake, celebrated for more than 350 preserved heritage buildings, an artsy, independent spirit and some of the best backcountry skiing access in the province.
Baker Street's heritage storefronts anchor a genuinely walkable downtown of independent shops, galleries and cafes, earning Nelson its long standing reputation as one of BC's best preserved heritage cities, with entire blocks dating to the silver mining boom of the 1890s.
Selkirk College's Nelson campus and a steady arts and film community give the city a younger, creative energy, while Whitewater Ski Resort and the surrounding Selkirk and Purcell Mountains draw skiers, mountain bikers and backcountry enthusiasts from across the region.
Kootenay Lake laps at the edge of downtown, and the hillside streets above offer character homes with lake and mountain views. Nelson draws buyers who want small city culture wrapped in genuine wilderness access.
