Kootenays
Where the Columbia and Kootenay Rivers meet, rich in Doukhobor heritage.
The Area
Castlegar sits at the confluence of the Columbia and Kootenay Rivers in the West Kootenay, a transportation and education hub with deep Doukhobor roots and its own regional airport.
The Doukhobor Discovery Centre and the Zuckerberg Island Heritage Park, home to a distinctive suspension footbridge and a Russian Orthodox style chapel house, preserve the story of the Doukhobor settlers who shaped the valley from the early 1900s onward.
Selkirk College's main campus sits above the city, and the West Kootenay Regional Airport gives Castlegar the area's busiest air links, connecting to Calgary and Vancouver. Highway 3 and Highway 22 meet here, making the city a natural hub for the surrounding valley.
The rivers, dams and surrounding mountains give Castlegar strong outdoor access, and housing costs remain modest relative to the rest of the province, appealing to buyers who want river valley living with real regional infrastructure close at hand.
