Vancouver Island
A heritage coal town split by the 49th parallel.
The Area
Ladysmith sits exactly on the 49th parallel, a line marked downtown, a heritage coal mining town founded by James Dunsmuir that has become one of Vancouver Island's most photogenic small communities.
First Avenue's colourful heritage storefronts, many dating to the town's founding in 1900 as a coal shipping port, have earned Ladysmith recognition as one of Canada's prettiest small towns, and Transfer Beach Park gives the waterfront a sandy beach and amphitheatre for summer events.
The town's coal mining and shipping history shaped its original layout along the harbour, and nearby Chemainus, famous for its outdoor murals depicting Vancouver Island history, sits just south along the same stretch of Highway 1.
Ladysmith Harbour supports a working marina and a growing arts and food scene downtown, and the town's small scale, heritage character and central Island location between Nanaimo and Duncan continue to draw buyers looking for genuine small town charm.
