BC North
Mile 0 of the Alaska Highway, in the heart of Peace grain country.
The Area
Dawson Creek marks the official start of the Alaska Highway, a landmark still celebrated downtown, and serves as a trading centre for the surrounding Peace River grain belt.
The Alaska Highway's Mile 0 post and the restored grain elevator that now houses the Dawson Creek Art Gallery anchor a compact, historic downtown, a reminder of the highway's 1942 wartime construction and the farming economy that came before and after it.
Agriculture remains central to the local economy, with grain, canola and cattle operations across the surrounding Peace Country, alongside a steady oil and gas sector shared with neighbouring Fort St. John. Highway 97 connects the city south to the rest of BC and east into Alberta.
Home prices here are among the most affordable of any BC city, drawing buyers who want acreage, a small town pace and a genuine four season Peace Country climate without the cost of the coast.
