Alberta
A fast growing commuter city just north of Calgary.
The Area
Airdrie sits about twenty minutes north of Calgary on Highway 2 and has been one of the fastest growing cities in Canada, expanding from a small town into a full sized city in a generation.
Most of the housing stock is new. Communities such as Kings Heights, Bayside with its canal system, Windsong and Cooper's Crossing were largely built in the last two decades and are dominated by detached homes and townhouses, generally larger and cheaper than equivalents inside Calgary.
The older downtown along Main Street keeps a small town centre, and Nose Creek Park runs through the middle of the city with pathways connecting most neighbourhoods. Genesis Place is the main recreation centre.
Highway 2 puts Calgary's north end within about twenty minutes and Calgary International Airport within fifteen, which is the core of the appeal: Airdrie functions as a lower cost housing market for people working in Calgary while keeping its own schools, services and recreation.
