The Area
Markham holds one of the largest concentrations of technology companies in Canada, and is among the most diverse municipalities in the country, with a majority of residents born outside Canada.
Main Street Unionville is the historic heart, a preserved 19th century streetscape of clapboard shops beside Toogood Pond that draws visitors year round. Markham Village keeps a second, smaller heritage main street to the east.
Downtown Markham, built around Enterprise Boulevard, is the newer urban centre with condos, offices, a cinema and a York University campus nearby. Cornell in the east was built on new urbanist lines with rear laneways and front porches, and Thornhill and Milliken sit along the Toronto boundary.
IBM, AMD and a long list of technology and life sciences employers are based here, and Highway 407, the 404 and GO service on the Stouffville line connect the city. Housing runs from heritage homes in Unionville through large detached subdivisions to the condo towers of Downtown Markham.
