The Area
Brantford sits on a bend of the Grand River southwest of Hamilton, named for Joseph Brant and neighboured by Six Nations of the Grand River, the most populous First Nations reserve in Canada.
Wilfrid Laurier University's Brantford campus occupies a series of restored heritage buildings through the downtown, which reversed a long decline in the core and brought students into the centre of the city. Harmony Square hosts markets and events at its heart.
The Bell Homestead, where Alexander Graham Bell's family lived and where he conceived the telephone, is preserved on the edge of town. The Grand River corridor and the extensive trail system along it are the city's main recreational asset.
Highway 403 links Brantford to Hamilton and Woodstock, and the city has attracted buyers priced out of Waterloo Region and Hamilton. Housing remains among the more affordable in southwestern Ontario.
